According to the husband Elfi wanted some of the pork. Which apparently meant getting covered in flour.

ReplyDeleteOn a general question about Dachshunds, how different are the personalities between short haired and long haired (and standard vs mini)? I would absolutely love a standard long hair (think Peter Alexander's Penny) but am not sure what temperament would suit our household best (2 adults, 1 toddler, 2 Burmese and a 10 year old German Shorthaired Pointer & a house with no stairs). We're in southern Tasmania so hot weather is not an issue so far as a long haired breed is concerned.
Absolutely love your two, they are a stunning pair. Please keep up the dachshund posts, your dachshund photos are gorgeous!

DeleteI've only had experience with miniatures, so not sure if the same applies for standards, but here's what I've found out:
- Long hairs do have a reputation for being quieter, gentler, more of a lap dog type thing. This is definitely true for our Ferdi, and seems to be the accepted wisdom. However, I do know a (pure bred) long hair who is quite stand offish and a bit snappy at times too (Ferdi is a not pure bred, ie. he didn't come with papers, but he is all dachshund!). And Ferdi can be a bit barky/bravado-ish with other dogs (though I think that's a socialisation problem as since moving to Korea they don't interact with other dogs often).
- Short hairs are known for being a bit more energetic and feisty. This is the case with Elfi! Also, every one I know that owns a female short hair says they are just as needy and neurotic as Elfi is...seems to be a trait there!
- Before dachshunds I had 'proper' dogs (Kelpies crosses mainly). I love doxies because they are like a big dog in a small personality. They have all the personality and intelligence (and bullishness!) or a bigger dog, but in a more manageable size. in short, they are awesome!

Hi Emily, thanks for the response! I haven't tried commenting before so rest assured! I have heard the longhairs are more laid back and that really does appeal to me after owning a hyperactive and highly excitable German Shorthaired Pointer for 10 years now.
DeleteI adore dachshunds and have wanted one since I was a small kid. I have owned a Blue Heeler cross and now a German Pointer.
They seem to be getting more and more popular as a breed. We see at least 5 or 6 walked around our part of Hobart.
I've told my husband that my 40th birthday present in 3 years time can be a dachshund, to take the sting out of turning the big 4-0. :S
On another note, have you heard/seen of the Dachshund UN installation in Melbourne? It is fantastic! Google it if you haven't heard of it! :)
Oh thank goodness! At first I was thinking this was going to be a medical condition. So, I'm glad that it turned out to be flour.....cute!
